Unmasked

Although Covid is behind us, I have noticed people wearing masks and can only assume that their mask experience of 2020 was a positive one. As for me -  I have a low threshold for rejection. I am careful to get my nails done, wear make- up (even when I am home alone - I agree, it’s odd)  and style my hair. With this emphasis on vanity, masks present a problem. I tried a variety of different types and styles and although I was sure stripes would be the best choice, I had trouble breathing when I wore my striped mask. I started this adventure with a small paisley print that was tied in the back with ribbons. Cute but the print didn’t work with most of my outfits. If you are thinking “What a shallow, maternalistic, offensively privileged person.” I am the first to agree. To quote Popeye, “I am what I am” and I will leave it at that.

Selecting the right mask is difficult. The fellow who checked my car for a repair was wearing an interesting mask, it had a small round air vent. I noticed a woman using an unusual style that she called a ‘Gator.’  It was sort of a neck scarf that you pull up over your mouth and nose when needed. When I explained to her that I have trouble breathing when I wear a mask for more than fifteen minutes, she assured me that the Gator was the way to go. Masks that look very ‘medical assistant’ turn me off for that very reason. Medicine was never a career choice for me. Because I enjoy working with young children, I consider diaper changing to be ‘essential.’

I am reminded of the cliché ‘If the shoe fits wear it’ but can that apply to masks? If this is to become a long-term accessory, I want more than a fit. One online product caught my attention. The masks were named ‘love’, ‘confidence’ and ‘opportunity.’ I’m not making this up. They looked like masks to me. They were made in The Netherlands and it would take more than three weeks for delivery, so I rejected the opportunity to confidently experience love.

Reflecting on my 2020 Covid mask experience,  I am looking for a mask that is lightweight, goes with everything, allows me to breathe and is invisible.
