Ground Hog Day was last week. If you missed it, I am sorry. A day not to be missed.
I try not to be negative but sometimes I compare what we do in the US for ‘fun’ and what I see happening around the world. We are dancing around dressed up like ground hogs while very real enemies want to annihilate us. I guess I am getting old. I should say ‘older.’ Recently a relative died at 102. Not bad. She was alert and busy until the very end.
If this is a crabby blog instead of a light humor blog then I apologize and will move forward with happier thoughts. Such as: Valentines Day is coming – a chance to eat chocolate and not feel guilty. Presidents Day –okaaay, I’m not fussy. Spring will be here soon. I prefer fall and winter but most folks welcome spring.
It seems like there is a “Day” for just about everything and I look forward to checking this online to see if there is a “pet’ day. I am all about pets. I loved my cats. Recently someone showed me pictures on her phone of her two dogs. I looked. Then I took out my cat photos – Simon on the bed. Simon lounging inside the dryer. Simon in the bathtub. She walked away. “Show them to so & so – she likes cats.” What! I gave you doggie appreciation time and my precious kitties are scorned. The prejudice against cats can be staggering. With that thought in mind I will share a Dog vs Cat column from my never ending stack of FINNICKY Past.
Viva La Difference!
The differences between cats & dogs are many. First of all the expression ‘Fighting like cats & dogs’ is a wicked lie. I have seen dogs chase cats, but I have never seen a dog and a cat in a fight and if you have been read my blog Finnicky, you will know that if I haven’t seen it, it doesn’t exist. So, I refute this cliché and replace it with ‘Fighting like two cats.’ Oh my gosh, can my sweet little kitties go at it! Shocking. Cats may fight with each other but the difference between a cat fight and a dog fight should be self -evident. If not, we will now take a look at the differences between cats and dogs and approach this systematically by subject area.
ENVIROMENTAL PREFERENCES
Radically different between the two. Dogs want to run in a wide- open spaces. Cats are happy to sit in a cardboard box.
SLEEPING HABITS
Cats like to cuddle up with each other or any living thing that might happen to be at rest.
Dogs – Don’t you touch that dog while he’s sleeping, he will snap growl and bite.
Which leads to the topic of AGGRESSION.
AGGRESSION
Dogs will attack. Have you ever seen a sign that says BEWARE – CAT? I rest my case.
If a dog knows you are afraid, it is even worse. They can sense it or smell it, the bottom line is if you know you are afraid, then you know the dog knows and you also know that if the dog knows it is worse for you so you may as well give up.
A cat will never run to a fence and hiss at you. They are not ready to scratch or bite unless some barbarian hurts them first.
DISPOSITION
Dogs are very demanding. They want to go out. They want to go for a walk. They will follow you around the house. A friend told me she was losing her mind because every time she stood up her husband’s dog would get up. If they were watching TV and she got up to go into the kitchen, the dog would get up and follow her. Good grief. Sounds like grounds for divorce to me.
Cats are one hundred percent ‘go with the flow.’
CURIOSITY
Cats are curious and peek into everything to see what’s up. Dogs have a ‘don’t bother me’ attitude. “I am resting, and whatever has landed on my nose needs to go, but later, when I am not resting”.
ACTIVITIES
You have to take dogs places. To the park, for a walk, for a car ride. Cats are happy to stay home. They may go from the bed to the chair to the window, but there are no big travel plans for cats.
OWNERSHIP
If any dog owners are still reading this, I will close with the concept of OWNERSHIP. Sorry folks but you don’t own your dog, your dog owns you. As for cats, they are happy to live with you on a mutual affection basis. No loyalty pledge, no demands, just food, water and a loving lap.
